Domestic Abuse in Literature and Society According to an article published by the Huffington Post, over 38 million women have experienced physical domestic violence in their lifetimes. This is one of many shocking statistics revolving around the issue of domestic violence. Today the topic of domestic abuse is swept under the rug and are dark secrets among families. It is important for society to become more aware of these horrifying crimes that occur internationally. Although many people become aware of controversial issues more commonly through the news/media and statistics, another effective way messages are spread through literary works. An example of a literary work that focuses around the issue of domestic abuse is a poem written in 1989 by the author Jo Carson.
